New compact PlayStation 2 unveiled

While most gamers expected Sony to announce the imminent death of its seven year-old PS2 console, intsead unearthed plans reavel the firm is to re-release a new, cut-price version of the system early next year.
According to industry trade paper MCV, Sony will introduce the 'compact' PS2 in America early 2008 for $99 - a full $40 less than the current model is on sale for.
In the UK, rumours suggest Sony could sell the revised machine for as little as £75 "or maybe lower," claims MCV.
The updated console will feature a built-in power supply, allowing Sony to manufacture the unit for less.
Worldwide PS2 sales, which currently stand at more than 120 million units, are expected to increase by some margin as Sony aims the new compact console at younger gamers looking for their very first games system.
