Following news that the Mario release clocked up 500,000 sales in America in its first week, statistics from gamerankings.com, a site that collates review scores from across the internet, has shown that the Nintendo best-seller has the highest overall average review score of any game ever released at 97.9%.
The rating puts the title ahead of other acclaimed launches, including The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time at 97.6%, Metroid Prime at 96.3%, The Orange Box at 96.2%, Resident Evil 4 at 95.8% and Super Mario 64 at 95.7%.
The game, which also scored 10/10 in the high-end games magazine Edge, now looks likely to see worldwide sales of Mario games top the record-breaking 200 million mark.
