Sony: 'We have 15 PS3 exclusives lined up'

Senior vice president of marketing Peter Dillie has said that his firm has 15 PlayStation 3 exclusives lined up for release between September 2007 and April 2008.

The publisher has revealed it has 15 internal studios working on PlayStation games, which is more than its two main rivals Microsoft and Nintendo have combined.

But Sony is believed to be developing more games internally as fewer third-party publishers are prepared to take the risk of creating a costly PS3 exclusive.

Games analyst Billy Pidgeron has said games can now cost up to $50 million dollars to create, adding that even the larger publishers cannot afford to release failures. "You might be able to weather one title coming in at 500,000 in sales, but two or three failures like that and even big publishers are going to be hurting."

His comments come after an assistant producer on the forthcoming PlayStation 3 exclusive Metal Gear Solid 4 revealed the title will need to sell over one million copies on its first day in order to cover its high development costs.

Speaking to Reuters, Konami's Ryan Payton said: "The PlayStation brand has always been good to us, and we're pretty bullish on the PS3.

"We're telling our fans that if you want to play Metal Gear Solid 4, you have to buy a PS3."

The PlayStation 2 has seen nearly 100 games sell more than one million copies, but the PlayStation 3 has only seen two games reach the milestone figure.
