With rumours that Microsoft will launch a video-on-demand service for its Xbox 360 console before the end of this year, Variety has reported that Sony's own PS3 will carry the feature from early 2008.
Although no launch date for the European service has yet been confirmed, the magazine states it will arrive in Japan in the new year.
The PlayStation 3 service will initially offer motor racing content linked with the release of Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, as well as episodes of the BBC's Top Gear programme and a documentary about the Nissan GT-R.
According to the report, each download on the PS3 service will cost around 90p.
