'Assassin's Creed' tops latest games chart

French games publisher Ubisoft ended 2007 on a high note after its acclaimed next-gen action title Assassin's Creed hit the top spot in the latest all-formats games chart.

Christmas number one Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare spent only one week at the top after seeing its sales drop 37%.

EA Sports' FIFA 2008 missed out on the number one position by just 1,000 copies, with the firm enjoying just one week at the top in the past 11 weeks.

After the Christmas rush, only FIFA 2008 and Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 saw their sales increase, with the latter rising thanks largely to retailers promoting the Xbox 360 version over the past week.

Movie spin-off The Golden Compass entered this week's top ten, up one place, after last week's ninth-placed game Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games completely disappeared from the top 40 due to stock shortages.

The top ten games in full:

1. (2) Assassin's Creed (Ubisoft)
2. (4) FIFA 2008 (EA Sports)
