The add-on unit, which is due for release this year, will connect to the PlayStation 3's USB port and features an aerial socket at the rear. Once running, the device promises an electronic programme guide and a 'well-designed menu system'.
Sony granted the BBC a first look at PlayTV and the corporation has revealed users will be able to record, pause and rewind live TV, while a built-in dual-tuner means viewers will be able to watch one channel while recording another.
However, PlayTV will not initially allow users to record TV while playing games, but Sony claims it is working on this feature via a downloadable software update.
Most unique to the system is the ability to watch live TV remotely via a Portable PlayStation. Due to Sony's Remote Play technology, PSP owners can already connect to a PS3 via Wi-Fi to watch content stored on the console's hard drive and PlayTV promises to be a 'significant extension' of this.
Microsoft iis planning a content on-demand service for the Xbox 360 after signing a deal with BT, featuring movies, TV, music videos and BT Vision’s ‘near live’ FA Premier League football matches, but no launch date has yet been announced.
