BBC iPlayer now available on PS3

A PlayStation 3 website has been launched that offers an unofficial way of using the BBC's iPlayer on the console.

Ps3iplayer.com was developed in protest at the BBC for not releasing its iPlayer on the PS3, following its release on Nintendo's Wii console last week.

The site, which states it was developed "mainly [as] a demonstration of how easily the BBC could support the PS3 with their Wii version," was produced by full-time web developer Chris Warren.

Speaking to DS, Warren said: "I built the site (yes, it's a one man job) because I enjoy the convenience of viewing the iPlayer on TV and the only web-browsing device I have connected all the time happens to be a PS3. When I heard that a beta version was being released for the Wii using Flash 7 I realised that it shouldn't take much work to get it to work on the PS3".

When asked if it can be used to watch any of the programmes featured on the official BBC iPlayer, Warren replied: "Yes, you can use it to view any of the programmes on iPlayer until the BBC either shuts it down, or they support the PS3 themselves (ideally using the higher quality MPEG4 streams currently only available to iPhone users)."
