PS2 outsells PS3 by 4m in 2008
Sony's next-generation PlayStation 3 console has been outsold by the PlayStation 2 during 2008, according to the latest sales figures.

Despite the PS2 nearing its eighth birthday, the year ending March 31 saw the system sell 13.73 million units globally, compared to 9.24 million for Sony's PS3 machine.

While sales of the PS3 are up 156% over the previous year, however, sales of the PS2 were down slightly by 7%.

Sony's shining star is the Portable PlayStation, which has sold 13.9 million units globally during the last financial year and was officially the firm's best-selling games machine after sales rose by 46%.

Software sales on the PlayStation 3 leapt by 335% during the past 12 months as 57.9 million games were bought for the machine. This compares to 55 million on the Portable PlayStation, which was up 1%.

However, the PlayStation 2 topped the games sales chart for Sony, despite a 20% drop over the previous year, after its global figure stood at 154 million units.
