BBC Worldwide has announced a free-to-play multiplayer game in the Doctor Who universe.

Doctor Who: Worlds In Time will allow players to follow in the footsteps of the Doctor by exploring new worlds and interacting with alien races.

It will focus on engaging, co-operative gameplay, with plans to build a global community of fans around the game.

"Doctor Who: Worlds in Time will be a free-to-play multiplayer online game that invites players to save the universe by using their wits to solve time-bending puzzles and pulse-pounding challenges," said BBC Online's EVP of digital entertainment Robert Nashak.

The title will be developed by San Francisco-based studio Three Rings, who has previously released Puzzle Pirates and Corpse Craft.

CEO Daniel James said: "Three Rings is delighted and honoured to have the opportunity to create an online game based on Doctor Who.

"Our goal with Worlds in Time is to capture the imaginative spirit and depth of the series, whilst being fun and easy to play for all ages."

Doctor Who: Worlds In Time will be released later this year.
