Gay Spy's essentials: January 21-27

In what is fast becoming customary fashion, we've boiled down the week's entertainment highlights to the bare essentials. The result is a deliciously unholy mixture of blood, beasties and Barrowman. (Before you ask, no, we haven't just recommended Torchwood three times.)

The one to... thumb through at a leisurely pace
Anything Goes, John Barrowman's "no holds barred" autobiography, is published this week. Written with his sister Carole, it follows his showbiz journey from Broadway to Torchwood, stopping off at titillating interludes in his romantic history in between. For the sake of our literary enjoyment, let's hope that, well, anything went.

The one to... watch
The third season of Supernatural begins Sunday at 9pm on ITV2. When we last saw Sam and Dean, the demon-hunting duo had, somewhat carelessly, allowed a swarm of fiendish nasties to escape from the gates of hell. Will they be able to save the world again? And what will happen to Dean in his final year of life? For the uninitiated, the boundless charms of Jensen Ackles (left) and Jared Padalecki (right) offer a brilliant excuse to tune in and get hooked.

The one to... aid your New Year's diet
Tim Burton's Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street finally hits British multiplexes on Friday. Off the top of our head, we can think of three main reasons to attend: one, it's likely to feature more gore than an entire series of Casualty; two, we'll find out if Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham-Carter can actually sing; three, with any luck, it'll put us off eating pies forever. Come on people, you owe it to your waistband to attend!
