Richard Woolfe session

Sky One/Two/Three controller Richard Woolfe is an immensely likeable bloke. He has an innate ability when it comes to transforming channels - he famously turned around the fortunes of Living TV and is now attempting the same, albeit tougher challenge at Sky - but is also known for not taking himself too seriously.

Last week he emerged from underneath a gymnast to launch the Sky One autumn schedule and at last year's festival he took part in a special version of Strictly Come Dancing. Tomorrow night he takes the stage for an Edinburgh edition of Stars in their Eyes.

Highlights of Woolfe's controller interview today (ex-BBC Three head Stuart Murphy gave the grilling):

  • He admitted that before taking the job, there were "so many things that infuriated me about Sky One".
  • 24 remains one of the channel's biggest assets, with ratings for the fifth season up by 15% year-on-year. A third of viewers watched the finale via multistart.
  • Another new series of Brainiac will air in the new year.
  • On the axe of Dream Team: "It was a fantastic show. It trailblazed that kind of drama... but the decision [to axe it] was the right one. There was nowhere else for the storylines to go."
  • The remake of The Prisoner is at a cost of £1 million an episode. "I hope it will be our Doctor Who," said Woolfe, adding that there are a number of people in frame for the lead role, including Christopher Eccleston.
  • Woolfe is seen lurking in an episode of Eric McCormack's new comedy Lovespring International, which premieres here tomorrow.
