Whedon, the creator of Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Firefly, screened the musical to a crowd of industry insiders on Thursday. The first part will make its public debut on DrHorrible.com next week, followed by two more 20-minute instalments.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Whedon explained that he came up with the idea for the low-budget production during the WGA strike.
"We didn't think about making money," he said. "I did it as a web thing because I didn't want something so big that it wouldn't work on the internet.
"Everything was done above board. We went to all the unions to make sure everyone involved had a waiver, etc," Whedon continued. "The DGA (director's guild) came out to be sure. We knew we had to do everything street legal."
Neil Patrick Harris, Nathan Fillion and Felicia Day star in the musical, which focuses on a superhero going up against his nemesis.
