BBC iPlayer application for Nokia N96
Published Tuesday, Sep 9 2008, 12:35 BST | By James Welsh
The BBC is to offer an iPlayer application optimised for the Nokia N96 when the phone launches in the UK on October 1.
The multimedia-focused N96 has a chipset for hardware decoding of H.264 video, the same standard used for iPlayer's streams on iPhone and iPod Touch. Support for other Symbian S60 3rd Edition phones, which have software support for H.264, has not been confirmed; however, some users with the devices have modified the user-agent string in their phone browsers to make them appear to the service as an iPhone and were able to stream programmes successfully.
"Over the past eight months we have worked tirelessly to ensure BBC iPlayer is available on as many platforms as possible, from the PC and TV to games consoles and mobiles," said Erik Huggers, director of future media and technology at the BBC. "This partnership is critical to ensuring we continue to reach out to audiences wherever they are and allow them to catch-up on their favourite BBC programmes."
