A little over 7 million listeners tuned into The Chris Moyles Show in the last quarter, down from record figures of 7.72 million earlier in the year.
Moyles said: "I know there's a lot of people who love what we do, so my view is give them what they want and hopefully when new people tune in they'll like it and stay.
"We're totally gutted the figures are down. It's really, really disappointing."
A Radio 1 spokesman said the station is not concerned with the dip in numbers: "It's about long-term gains for us. Chris's figures year-on-year are completely steady and it's not a significant loss on the quarter. Overall, we're delighted with the performance of Radio 1."
The station as a whole added 200,000 listeners in the last three months.
