Content from BBCi will scroll on the text displays of DAB radios when tuned to a BBC local station, the corporation has announced today.
The BBCi-powered service, featuring news headlines, weather and travel reports, and sport updates, will roll out on Thursday February 12. The service, which has already been trialled on BBC London and BBC WM, is being provided as part of a three year partnership with Unique Interactive, which provides dynamic text services to broadcasters.
John Allen, Head of New Services in the BBC English Regions, said:
"The new DAB text service will offer our listeners a new method of accessing local news and information with updates every 20 seconds.
"It means people won't have to wait on scheduled bulletins to catch up on the latest headlines."
Controller of the English Regions, Andy Griffee, added:
"This development opens up all kinds of exciting opportunities.
"For example, we may be able to provide constantly updated headlines on electronic ticker tapes or big screens on the outside of buildings. It's a real step forward."
