Mark Sharman has been in the job for four years, in which he has overseen the return of News At Ten as well as the relaunch of ITV's Formula One coverage.
"I'm happy that ITV Sport is in terrific shape. Our sports rights are now in place for the next four years and so it seems a good time to move on and return to grass roots production," he said.
"I'm also very pleased that we've built up sport on ITV4, which has helped to establish and build the channel's brand as well as to broaden out the breadth and depth of coverage across the ITV family."
ITV director of television Peter Fincham has publicly thanked Sharman for his "terrific contribution" to the broadcaster's success over the last four years.
"[He] will be leaving ITV Sport and ITV News in the best of health."
