BBC Resources axes 210 jobs

BBC Resources is to reduce headcount by close to 30% after no buyer was found to take on the post-production and studio components of its business.
Out of 210 jobs to be cut, 174 will come from post-production with the remainder from studios. The unit's chief executive, Mark Thomas, said in an email to staff that the move represented "significant operational restructing" that had been postponed while the sell-off process was completed earlier in the year.
Workers will be asked to apply for voluntary redundancy from next Monday, a move condemned by union BECTU.
"Many of these cuts are due to BBC production budgets being slashed, and the growing tendency of producers to spend money outside the Corporation, instead of using in-house facilities," said BECTU supervisory official Helen Ryan.
