The news presenter will return from maternity leave next month after giving birth to son Arlo in September.
The channel currently broadcasts a 30-minute news programme at 5pm and a later bulletin at 7pm, however Kaplinsky has reportedly asked to miss the early evening updates for the first few weeks.
"She is completely in love with Arlo and wants to be feeding him and putting him to bed," a source told The Sun.
"She is in discussions with Five about cutting back, perhaps for the first month.
"Every mum will understand. She wants to settle Arlo into a routine as she returns to work."
Kaplinksy joined Five from the BBC in February 2008 after signing a reported seven-figure contract with the broadcaster.
