According to the Daily Mail, managers told Ross that they could not sustain his current wages, while Graham Norton is reportedly being tipped to rival him at the broadcaster.
A source said: "Norton is going to overtake Ross as the BBC's highest-earning entertainer."
BBC One controller Jay Hunt said: "We are pushing very hard on talent, telling them we can't go on like this. Is Jonathan immune? Absolutely not."
However, when quizzed on Twitter if the supposed pay cut would mean less "tweets", Ross responded: "Nope. Just means the papers are making up stories again :)."
Ross also revealed that the guests on this week's Friday Night With Jonathan Ross will be Hugh Laurie, Eric Cantona, Dustin Hoffman and Gossip.
