The 59-year-old DJ sparked 25 complaints from listeners when she described Powell as "the greatest prime minister we never had" on her show this week.
Powell is best remembered for delivering his infamous 'rivers of blood' speech in 1968, which saw him warning about the dangers of uncontrolled immigration.
A Radio 2 spokesperson told The Mirror: "It was inappropriate and we've made that clear to Sarah."
A station insider added: "For Sarah to praise someone with such views is extremely foolish. It is embarrassing for the Beeb, who pride themselves on political impartiality."
Kennedy is no stranger to controversy. In 2007, she provoked outrage by claiming that black men are "invisible" at night. She has also joked that black people are better at athletics because they are used to being chased by lions.
