Erin Burnett targeted the Australian Prime Minister yesterday on US news channel CNBC after discovering that the country's government plans to spend $19 million (£9.5 million) culling feral camels in the outback.
The newsreader said on today's TV show: "It has come to my attention that some people are upset about a deadpan joke I made about camels yesterday. I made a deadpan joke about the Prime Minister of Australia, about the wild camels."
Burnett then described the camel cull as a "complicated issue" and invited Rudd on to the show to discuss "the Australian economy at any time".
The star's co-presenter Mark Haines continued the joke, saying at the end of the segment: "Have a great day and save a camel."
