Tony Ball 'wants to sell ITV productions'

Former Sky chief executive Ball recently became the frontrunner to succeed Michael Grade, who is moving into the position of executive chairman.
The previous leading candidate, HMV chief executive Simon Fox, previously pulled out of the running and Apple Europe boss Pascal Cagni was reportedly ruled out due to his lack of experience in running a public company.
This just leaves Ball as favourite for the job, but some are concerned that his tough approach to management could cause ripples in the commercial public service broadcaster. During his time at Sky, Ball focused heavily on selling premium football subscriptions, which helped the company to drive towards seven million subscribers.
Should he get the ITV position, it is believed that he would attempt to stabilise the PSB's balance sheet by using a rights issue to generate capital. He would also sanction the sale of ITV's production operation, which produces shows such as Coronation Street, in order to drive up the share price.
However, Ball failed to endear himself to the ITV board after using the City to lobby voters to force him into the job. After this approach proved fruitless, he decided to enter the official recruitment process, but received a rather cold reception from the selectors.
Ball is also understood to have a less than positive relationship with Grade and he would look to move on other members of ITV's board if was given the role.
