BBC Director-General Mark Thompson has outlined plans to "win back trust in parts of the country which can currently feel quite alienated from the BBC."

As part of a plan titled "Out of London," various parts of the corporation's activities will move to a new facility in Manchester. Divisions of the BBC moving north include: BBC Sport, CBBC TV and Radio, BBC Radio Five Live, New Media, Research and Development, and Formal Learning.

Around 1,800 staff will be moving to Manchester. The corporation has indicated that it is likely to be around five years before any major moves take place.

In addition to the large-scale Manchester investment, the BBC has also pledged - at a time when ITV is scaling back its regional operations - to "pursue the vision of more local TV and radio."
