BBC 'considering global kids channels'

The BBC is considering plans to launch new childrens channels around the world, according to a report in The Guardian on Wednesday.

The new pay TV stations would draw on the corporation's large library of original programming including Grange Hill, Teletubbies, Tweenies and Cave Girl.

One such channel, 'BBC Kids in Canada', is already on air but launching more in the US and other foreign markets could be instrumental in helping BBC Worldwide to achieve its target of doubling profits within two years.

BBC COO John Smith told the newspaper: "We've got quite a lot of channels, but not all of them are wholly owned and not all are BBC branded. There are some genres, like children's, where there is scope for the BBC to launch new channels."

BBC Worldwide currently operates ten wholly-owned or joint-venture channels outside of the UK.
