A BBC source said: "Chris Evans will take over from Wogan by March at the latest, with Wogan moving to weekends, and Simon Mayo taking on Evans's afternoon programme.
"The BBC was intending to announce this in December."
Neither Terry Wogan nor Chris Evans could be reached for comment.
A Radio 2 spokesman said: "We do not comment on the constant speculation regarding the Radio 2 schedule and its presenters."
