The current host of the afternoon slot on Radio Five Live will move across the BBC to Radio 2 when Evans replaces Terry Wogan on the breakfast show.
Mayo told listeners on his show: "You may have seen the odd rumour that following Terry Wogan's decision to quit breakfast and Chris Evans going to replace him that I would replace Chris on drivetime.
"These rumours are 100% accurate and that is indeed what will happen from the beginning of January next year. It is very, very exciting to be asked to do one of Radio 2's iconic programmes."
He added: "To paraphrase Terry's departure speech, let's stop this while we can just about tolerate each other."
Mayo will continue to co-host the film programme with Mark Kermode on Radio 5 Live from 2pm to 4pm on Fridays.
