A BBC producer has been shot and killed today in Mogadishu, Somalia.
Kate Peyton, who had worked for the BBC since 1993, had just arrived in the country. She had undergone surgery for a bullet wound, and the corporation initially said in a short media release this afternoon that her injuries were "not thought to be life-threatening."
However, it later emerged that Peyton died of internal bleeding.
"Kate was one of our most experienced and respected Foreign Affairs producers who had worked all over Africa and all over the world," said Helen Boaden, the BBC's head of news. "She will be greatly missed, both professionally and personally. We are in touch with the family and are doing everything we can to support them at this terrible time."
