According to early figures, an average of 5.71 million viewers - a 23.9% audience share - switched to BBC One at 9pm for the show, which was fronted by Jonathan Ross.
ITV1 enjoyed its regularly strong night of drama, meanwhile, beginning at 7pm with 7.52 million (33%) for the special Emmerdale's Greatest Love Triangles. Coronation Street claimed the top spot half an hour later with 11.9 million (47.9%), of which 8.43 million (33.2%) decided to stick around for The Royal at 8pm. BBC One's competing drama Down To Earth managed 5.22 million (20.6%) in the same slot.
Figures started to drop off at 9pm, however, with 5.53 million (25.8%) being suitably interested in Nicola Stephenson drama The Walk between 9pm and 11pm.
Five's new episode of Joey could only muster 2.13 million (8.5%) at 8pm.
Multichannel's top draw was the Sky Sports 1 coverage of the Carling Cup final between Chelsea and Liverpool, where an average of 2.05 million (19.8%) tuned in between 2pm and 6pm.
A new episode of The Simpsons rated past the million mark on Sky One, averaging 1.13 million (7.9%) at 6.30pm. Later in the evening, a new episode of 24 could only manage 597,000 (3.8%), but was still good for fifth place overall.
