David Jason's latest role as a master criminal helped ITV1 pull off a convincing ratings win yesterday (Sunday).
According to overnight figures, the one-off drama Diamond Geezer managed to hold a collosal 9.36 million viewers - a 42.3% share of the audience - between 9pm and 11pm.
Coronation Street remained the day's top performer, however, with an audience of 11.78 million (46.8%) at 7.30pm. Emmerdale had 8.52 million (36.8%) for third place, while Heartbeat put in 8.03 million (31%) in the 8pm hour.
All in all, the solid drama lineup helped ITV1 to a peaktime share of 38.1%, its best of the year so far.
BBC One, meanwhile, managed a respectable defence. Casualty pulled in 6.82 million (26.2%) in the 8pm hour, leading on from the 6.41 million (27.2%) who saw Antiques Roadshow at 6.45pm. The concluding part of history drama Archangel lost over 1 million viewers at 9pm however, with an average of 3.65 million (15%).
Channel 4's movie premiere The Wedding Planner attracted 1.95 million (8.8%) at 9pm, marginally more than the 1.86 million (8.2%) who saw Five's rival cinematic offering Commando at the same time.
Over on multichannel, top audience was 1.42 million (14.7%) for the Sky Sports 2 coverage of the Liverpool vs Everton game, shown between 3pm and 6.30pm.
BBC Three's heavily-trailed drama Casanova shed almost 400,000 viewers on its second outing to average a still-respectable 580,000 (4.3%) in the 10pm hour. Faring better was the preceding movie presentation What Women Want, which had an average of 627,000 (3.8%). A new Two Pints amused 489,000 (5.9%) at 11pm.
As usual, Sky One's Sunday night lineup dominated the ratings chart, leading with a Simpsons repeat on 912,000 (6.8%). A new Malcolm in the Middle had 815,000 (5.4%) to become the day's third most-watched show overall, while a new 24 took seventh place with 580,000 (3.6%).
