BBC Three tests new multi-screen service
Published Tuesday, Apr 19 2005, 04:36 BST | By James Welsh
BBC Three will begin tests of a new approach to multicasting beginning on May 1.
From 9pm on Sunday nights, viewers with digital satellite will be able to press the red button and select from a choice of three popular BBC Three programmes in addition to the channel's regular live broadcast.
"The 'Best of Three' multi-screen trial is a bold and ground-breaking new application which offers viewers more control and greater access to the wide range of programmes on BBC Three," said the channel's controller, Stuart Murphy. "In the future we believe viewers will want to watch their favourite show when they want it and not wait until a scheduler decides to transmit it."
The BBC says that the trial will last for six months. Murphy describes the trial as a method of bringing video-on-demand technologies to free-to-air television:
"It's a key stepping-stone to true video on demand in a free-to-air digital environment, and shows that we are serious about BBC Three being the country's most innovative digital channel, which evolves as fast as the audience's tastes and needs."
If the trial is successful, the new service will be rolled out to Freeview and digital cable.
