Jay Hunt is the new controller of BBC Daytime, it was confirmed today.

"I am incredibly excited about my new role," said Hunt. "I have always been passionate about daytime television and want to broaden the range of what is on offer across BBC One and BBC Two."

She continued: "The mix of live event coverage, news specials, drama and innovative factual entertainment has made daytime the market leader.

"I now have an opportunity to push the boundaries even further with lively, topical output and entertainment that speaks to this very discerning audience."

Hunt joined the BBC in 1989 as a researcher on BBC Breakfast News, worked her way up to the position of output editor, and then joined Newsnight. In 1998, she moved to Panorama, then became editor of the One O'Clock News and then in 2003 became editor of the Six O'Clock News.
