Podcasts to be supported by iTunes

Podcasting, a method of distributing content on the Internet that is growing in popularity with mainstream broadcasters as well as the wider Internet community, will be supported by the next version of Apple's popular iTunes programme.
Podcasting allows users to subscribe to feeds, much like feeds of syndicated text content, of audio programmes. If a new programme is available when an application checks a selected feed for updates, that programme my be automatically downloaded to a user's device to be listened to on-demand.
Broadcasters in the US are using the technology to distribute content that complements broadcast TV - one example being ABC News' AfterNote, an audio programme produced by the ABC News Political Unit that is designed to supplement existing coverage on TV. In the UK, the BBC is podcasting some of its radio programming.
Yesterday, Apple CEO Steve Jobs told an industry conference that iTunes 4.9 will include functionality to search for and more easily download podcasts.
