The 30-year-old will host a new weekly show on digital-only station 6 Music, rather than join Radio 1 where his late father worked for 37 years.
From June 4, Ravenscroft will replace the outgoing Bruce Dickinson on the regular three-hour Friday night slot, reports PA.
"I'm thrilled that 6 Music have asked me to present a weekly show," said Ravenscroft.
"It's great to be offered a home on a station with such amazing DJs, who open your ears to lots of exciting music, both new and old. I intend to do the same and can't wait to get started."
BBC 6 Music editor Paul Rodgers added: "Tom Ravenscroft is a great young broadcaster with all the knowledge, passion and articulacy that you might expect from someone of his lineage.
"Tom is much sought-after and we are thrilled that he thinks that 6 Music is the best way for him to reach his audience."
Ravenscroft previously acted as a DJ on Channel 4's ill-fated move into radio before it was scrapped in October 2008. He also stood in for 6 Music host Tom Robinson on his show last July.
In other news, 6 Music has increased its online listeners by 50% in just 12 months, despite facing the axe under BBC plans.
