Fiona Phillips has expressed disappointment over Steve Rider's decision to quit as ITV Sport's main anchor.

Rider announced that he was bowing out from the role last week in the aftermath of former One Show host Adrian Chiles being snapped up to front the channel's football coverage.

Writing in The Mirror, Phillips commented: "How sad that Steve Rider has quit ITV Sport to make way for Adrian Chiles.

"Don't get me wrong, I love Chilesy - I've followed his career since his Saturday morning stints on Radio 5 - but, for me, Rider's contribution has been unique in that he has let his passion for everything he covers triumph over a need to project his own personality."

The former GMTV host added: "His quiet control and mastery commands huge respect from sports fans. He's not the sort to blow his own trumpet, so let me do it for him. You'll be missed, Steve. I hope it's not the last we'll see of you."

ITV recently said that it is looking forward to carrying out talks with Rider about "future projects and opportunities".
