During her tenure, former BBC One controller Heggessey has guided Talkback Thames to become one of the most successful UK production firms, including a spate of hit shows such as Britain's Got Talent, The Apprentice and The X Factor.
It is thought, though, that ITV's decision to axe long-running drama The Bill was a big blow to Heggessey, particularly in terms of the associated job losses.
However, there were no indications that she was close to quitting the company, which is still considered to be in very good shape.
After Heggessey departs, Talkback Thames chief operating officer Sara Geater will take over as interim chief executive, reporting to Tony Cohen, chief executive of Talkback parent company Freemantle Media.
"We can confirm that Lorraine Heggessey is stepping down as the chief executive of Talkback Thames," said a company spokeswoman.
"Sara Geater will now take over as interim chief executive for Talkback Thames reporting into Tony Cohen. No further comment at this time."
Heggessey was recently linked with the chief executive position at Channel 4 before it went to ex-UKTV boss David Abraham, but it's unclear now what she will do next.
