On Saturday, 1.5m viewers were left outraged when ITV1 HD switched to a Hyundai advert and then a blank screen just as Steven Gerrard scored in the fourth minute against the USA.
The broadcaster has blamed transmission company Technicolor for the problem, which was caused by "human error" in the firm's London studio.
On Sunday, ITV's group technology director Richard Cross indicated that the broadcaster had met with Technicolor "to put in place measures to address the issue".
However, around 5,000 people have complained directly to ITV about the incident. It's unclear at this stage how many have also submitted their objections to Ofcom.
In February 2009, ITV received 1,000 complaints after a transmission glitch caused its live coverage of Everton's FA Cup game against Liverpool to switch to an advert just as Dan Gosling scored the winning goal.
