On Saturday, 1.5m viewers were left outraged when ITV1 HD switched to a Hyundai advert and then a blank screen just as Steven Gerrard scored in the fourth minute against the USA.
The media regulator has received a total of 773 complaints about the incident, which ITV has blamed on "human error" at its transmission company Technicolor.
Ofcom will now asses the complaints, which are in addition to the 5,000 complaints already submitted directly to ITV, to see if it needs to launch an investigation.
In February 2009, ITV received 1,000 complaints after a transmission glitch caused its live coverage of Everton's FA Cup game against Liverpool to switch to an advert just as Dan Gosling scored the winning goal.
