Almost 5 million viewers tuned in for Manchester United's Champions League clash with Debrecen last night, according to early figures.
BBC One's coverage of the game - which saw the home side triumph 3-0 - pulled in an average of 4.8 million (23%) between 8pm and 10pm. Although the figures are down on the 6.6 million who watched Holby City in the same slot last week, the show did rank third place for the day overall, behind only EastEnders (7.56 million, 41%) and Emmerdale (7.32 million, 42.8%).
ITV1's Taggart repeat posted a respectable, albeit unspectacular, 3.94 million (18.5%) from 9pm while on Channel 4, documentary Born to Be Different interested 2.58 million (11.9%). BBC Two's Sad to Be Gay, following a gay man who attempts to 'unlearn' his sexuality, had 1.42 million (6.5%).
ITV2's coverage of the Champions League game between Everton and Villarreal was multichannel's top ranking effort of the day, with an average of 606,000 (4.3%) tuning in between 7.30pm and 10.30pm.
The new series of Without A Trace on E4 got off to a strong start at 9pm, commanding 355,000 (2.4%) and landing sixth place overall. It narrowly trumped LivingTV's Most Haunted, which had 354,000 (2.4%).
