BBC launches intl marketing push for News Online
The BBC is planning a major new marketing push to increase online news audiences in the US and Western Europe.

The six-month campaign, 'news for a non-stop world', begins on Monday (September 26), targetting the audience of "inquistives" who grab sneaky surfing time while at work.

"Research we commissioned into online news users reveals that aimless surfing is a thing of the past," said Alan Booth, controller of marketing at the World Service. "People go online for a purpose - they are inquisitive to find information, learn about the latest news or catch up on a story."

Most of the 'news for a non-stop world' initiatives involve integration of content into messaging services such as MSN Messenger (Denmark, Finland, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden) and ICQ (the US).

"bbcnews.com already attracts over 50 per cent of its international audience from the US," added Booth. "We also get significant traffic from Western Europe. In both markets there is a demonstrable demand for international news; an alternative and additional perspective on world events - in addition to that provided by local suppliers."
