Murphy, who will join the firm as creative director, is said to be negotiating his exit from the BBC. Neither party has yet to comment on the deal.
Among those tipped as replacements are John Keeling, controller of UKTV Gold; Richard Woolfe, director of Living TV; and Red Johnson, editor of UKTV Gold and Drama.
Murphy has been instrumental to the success of BBC Three, having overseen its launch in 2003 and its predecessor, BBC Choice, since 1999. One of his final commissions for the channel before his impending departure is new Doctor Who spinoff Torchwood, announced earlier today.
