MTV Networks has confirmed plans to launch a high definition version of Comedy Central on Sky and Virgin Media.

Comedy Central HD will launch on Sky channel 222 on August 9, but will not become available on Virgin Media until September 1.

The channel will broadcast high definition versions of shows such as Two And A Half Men, 30 Rock and South Park, along with new UK commissions.

"Showcasing Comedy Central content in HD is a real coup for our viewers and an important expansion for the MTV Networks HD offering," said MTV Networks UK and Ireland managing director David Lynn.

"We'll continue to investigate HD opportunities that will excite our audience."

Comedy Central UK managing director Jill Offman added: "We've always been the funniest channel on TV, now we'll be the best looking one too."

Comedy Central HD will take position 133 on Virgin Media's electronic programming guide. After the launch, the Comedy Central channel bouquet will run as follows:

Comedy Central 132
Comedy Central HD 133
Comedy Central +1 134

Comedy Central Extra, which is currently available at position 134 on Virgin Media's programming guide, will move to channel 185.
