Scottish TV and Grampian TV are to contribute £1.2 million towards a new Gaelic TV channel, Ofcom has announced.
Earlier this year, the regulator recommended that the commercial broadcasters establish the dedicated station in conjunction with the BBC. In return, Scottish and Grampian would be allowed to reduce the amount of Gaelic programmes shown during primetime on their respective channels.
“Ofcom's agreement with Scottish and Grampian represents a positive step forward in the progress towards a digital channel dedicated to Gaelic viewers," said Vicki Nash, Director of Ofcom Scotland.
The channel could be on air by January 2007 at the earliest.
