The broadcaster has teamed up with The History Channel's production division History Films for Caves Of Forgotten Dreams, which will document the world's oldest cave art, reports Broadcast.
German director Herzog has secured exclusive access to the Chauvet caves in southern France, which house pictures dating back around 32,000 years.
The feature was initially intended to be just a traditional documentary, but Herzog insisted on producing it in 3D to demonstrate the relationship between the paintings and the cave.
The French Ministry of Culture And Communication is also providing funding for the film, which will be Herzog's first 3D feature.
After premiering at next month's Toronto International Film Festival, the movie will be released in cinemas around the world in 2011.
The film will also be broadcast in 2D on More4 as part of the True Stories series, which has previously featured Herzog's Grizzly Man and Encounters At The End Of The World.
