CNN has donated $100,000 to the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association in America.
The donation was made to the NLGJA Scholarship Fund endowment in support of the Leroy F. Adams Scholarship Award. The award is named for NLGJA's late founder, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and editor.
"CNN is only as strong as its journalists and this donation helps ensure that we not only support an outstanding organisation of journalists but a deep resource for hiring future CNN anchors, correspondents and producers," said CNN News Group president Jim Walton.
The $5,000 Aarons scholarship is awarded annually to an LGBT undergraduate or graduate student who is planning a career in journalism and committed NLGJA's mission of fair and accurate coverage of the LGBT community.
"This unprecedented gift from CNN is a milestone for NLGJA as the largest single gift from a news media company to the organisation," said NLGJA executive director Pamela Strother. "CNN has ensured that the Aarons Award will be fully funded and has provided a solid base to our endowment to allow us to grow our awards programme to help even more deserving journalism students."
