Sky Sports has announced plans to broadcast the Prizefighter boxing tournament in 3D for the first time.

Prizefighter promoter Matchroom Sport has lined up eight fighters to battle for the £32,000 top prize at London's Olympia on January 29.

Former British super-middleweight champion Tony Dodson is the biggest name on the bill, which also includes four unbeaten fighters and three newcomers.

All fights in the light-heavyweight tournament will be aired on the Sky 3D channel, starting at 8pm. Standard and high definition coverage will be available on Sky Sports 1.

"After the last cracking Prizefighter, we're excited to kick-start the year with the light-heavyweights division," said Matchroom managing director Eddie Hearn.

"As always, there's an interesting mix of hungry fighters looking to use the series to catapult them to a title shot as we've seen so many times before.

"We're also delighted that this will be the first ever Prizefighter event to be broadcast in 3D - which will literally add another dimension to another thrilling night of action."

Also today, Sky's director of TV product development Brian Lenz defended the firm's investment in 3D television in response to claims that the technology will never become mainstream.
