Bradford will handle all documentaries for the two stations, including ongoing programming strands such as The Surgery and one-off specials. He will work directly with in-house teams and independent producers.
In the new role, Bradford will also manage all social action output, with a particular focus on commissioning documentaries about issues affecting young people in Britain.
Bradford, who will report to Radio 1 deputy controller Ben Cooper, said that he was eager to work closely with programme suppliers.
"I'm looking forward to forging closer links between the two networks and the indies, to ensure that our young audience gets to hear some of the most creative and engaging output possible," he said.
Cooper added: "I want Radio 1 to strengthen its relationship with the independent sector of the industry and work together to commission more high quality programmes that really stand out."
The BBC has also promoted Joe Harland to the role of short-form content editor for Radio 1 and 1Xtra, with responsibility for all audio and video content.
Harland will oversee a new team tasked with the capture and distribution of on-demand content and video clips, such as artist interviews and live performances.
He said: "As the way that young listeners consume radio continues to evolve, it's vital that BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra create the very best radio not only via FM and DAB but also great audio and visual content that they can enjoy on their laptops, phones and via social media."
Also today, BBC Radio 1 has appointed Jason Carter as event director to oversee a major outdoor music extravaganza planned for the London Festival 2012.
