Odeon has announced plans to run what is claimed to be a world-first cinema screening of opera in 3D for Valentine's Day.

Tonight, selected Odeon cinemas in the UK and Ireland will run 3D screenings of the Royal Opera House production of Georges Bizet's Carmen.

Odeon will also run a world-first cinema screening of live opera on February 23 for the English National Opera's production of Donizetti's Lucrezia Borgia, direct from the Coliseum.

Odeon & UCI cinemas chief executive Rupert Gavin said: "We are thrilled to be able to offer our guests a wide variety of entertainment on the big screen, including the world's first 3D opera as part of Odeon Plus.

"They are the perfect choice for those that want to try something new - particularly those who fancy an alternative to the traditional Valentine's Day evening."

On February 23, Sky will also broadcast Lucrezia Borgia - the opera debut of filmmaker Mike Figgis - live in 3D on the new Sky 3D entertainment channel.
