UKTV lands Euroleague basketball rights
Published Tuesday, Apr 4 2006, 21:03 BST | By Neil Wilkes
Coverage of the Euroleague basketball tournament is to be broadcast in the UK for the first time.
The annual event features teams from thirteen countries including Spain, Italy, Germany and France, but not the UK.
UKTV, the joint-venture broadcaster from Flextech and the BBC, has picked up the rights to air the quarter finals and the Final Four games on UKTV G2 and its new broadband website, uktvslam.tv, at the end of this month.
"This is a terrific opportunity for UKTV and Euroleague to work together to build the presence of basketball in the UK and to give the British audience an opportunity to see the Euroleague final live on UKTV G2," said Martin Henlan, sports development manager at UKTV. "This deal represents the first live sports broadcast on UKTV, as well as the first live broadband coverage from our new website."
The news comes a month after the broadcaster concluded a huge deal to air extensive coverage of the World Cup this summer.
