Sky has unveiled plans to stage its own TV-based entertainment festival in Manchester across three days in August.
The "Sky Festival" will feature more than 30 events themed around 25 channels available through the digital service. They include opportunities to sing with the National Opera (Artsworld), learn how to read the news (Sky News), attend free film screenings (Sky Movies) and brush up on bowling skills at a cricket ground (Sky Sports).
Other events include a live, top-secret performance by a major music artist (VH-1) and a chance for kids to meet their favourite Nickelodeon channels. Community Channel, Discovery Channel, Playhouse Disney, FX, Paramount Comedy, E! and LivingTV will also participate with their own events.
Dawn Airey, Sky's MD of channels and services, said that the festival was a way of "giving something back to customers" and, although she hoped it would tempt new customers to join, insisted that there would "not be a salesperson in sight".
