MacGillivray, who is currently Thinkbox's head of content, will be responsible for leading all marketing activity for the organisation that represents Channel 4, ITV, Sky Media, Turner Media Innovations and Viacom.
He will report to Lindsey Clay, who was appointed Thinkbox's first managing director in February after previously serving as marketing director. MacGillivray also takes a seat on the Thinkbox board.
"I've had the pleasure of working with Andy for nearly four years and he is quite simply one of the nicest and most talented people I have ever had the privilege of working with," said Clay.
"He has that brilliant combination of creativity and strategic thinking. It made the decision of who to appoint as our new marketing director very easy as the perfect candidate was already in the building."
MacGillivray added: "It's a well worn cliché, but it's a great time to be in TV and I'm genuinely excited about this new role at Thinkbox.
"In the time I've been here I've witnessed a transformation in the perception of TV and am proud of the role Thinkbox has played. I'm looking forward to helping build further on what has already been achieved."
After joining Thinkbox in 2005 as content editor, MacGillivray played a pivotal role in the Thinkbox Experience, an industry event which brought together the UK broadcasters for the first time. Shortly after, he became the organisation's first head of content.
Prior to this, MacGillivray held various creative roles at marketing agency Sponsorvision, and was part of the creative team behind Cadbury's sponsorship of Coronation Street.
Next month, Opera OMG's Neil Mortensen will join Thinkbox as the organisation's new research and planning director, overseeing the Tellyporting studies and Brainwaves Project.
